RoughNeX was created in March 2002 by Jackal, who originally created the clan for Counter Strike on the PC. The team consisted of 8 players who stuck with the clan for over a year. They played with the tag xRx, playing many matches with mixed results, but carried on playing.
Eventually in the summer of 2003 the Playstation 2 was adapted to be played online. 3 of the xRx squad moved onto it, beginning with Hardware Online Arena. On the release of Socom: U.S. Navy SEALs, Jackal and some of his squad moved onto it, changing the tag to [R-N]. RoughNeX recruited, building up a squad, some of whom are still in the clan today, and competed on socombattles.com.
November 2004 saw the dawn of a new age for RoughNeX…the release of Killzone.
Jackal re-made the clan, under the RNX tag, and went on a recruiting drive on the first day, picking up several top players on the game, including Lanky , who shortly became Co-Leader. This squad performed very effectively, becoming a dominant team in game and on GameBattles. The teams ability meant other top players became interested in joining the ranks of the RoughNex, resulting in the team coming runners up in all 3 GB tournaments, whilst topping the ladder for months - holding the crown for 59 days, as well as having very successful quads and singles players. The clan retired after a long and successful period on the game, with a record of 45-9.
During and after the lifespan of Killzone, the team moved onto other titles, including Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Timesplitters and Rainbow Six, going undefeated on all three, until losing in the GameBattles Timesplitters tournament final. In November 2005 Battlefield 2: Modern Combat was released, an immensely popular clan game where the team proved themselves once again. RoughNeX went unbeaten by any EU team on the GameBattles ladder, beating everyone, but losing out on a tournament win to an amalgamation of all the best USA clans in one. Eventually the team stopped competing, after winning a knives only tournament, due to a lack of opponents willing to play them.
Modern Combat marked the end of the Playstation 2 online and a long period of inactivity before the release of the Playstation 3 - and it was during this time that Bob joined the team. With the release of the PS3 came it’s flagship shooter; Resistance: Fall of Man, a game which many of the clan had little interest in resulting in the team not participating on the game. Rainbow Six: Vegas was the game that got the squad back together for a brief period of time, with the team successfully competing on ConsoleGaming.eu. However it was during this period that the clan split in two, with many of the clan’s core members forming their own clan or going inactive, most of which had previously made up the Vegas team. Those that remained were forced to pick up the game to carry on, and did not disappoint, knocking out the favourites but coming unfortunate runners up in the tournament.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare marked a rebuilding stage for RoughNeX, with Lanky acting as Clan Leader, with Bob as Co-Leader. With only a handful of players in the clan active the impetus was on recruiting. Fortunately the quality of the players available and the clan’s reputation facilitated this task and many top quality players were recruited into the clan. The new squad competed in the opening CoD4 tournament, reaching the quarterfinals before being knocked out by the eventual winners.
The squad was full of optimism now they had a solid base again, and moved on to Unreal Tournament 3, quickly establishing themselves as the best clan, and going unbeaten. CoD4 overshadowed the game however, and the team ran out of opponents. The squad was left anticipating the release of Rainbow Six: Vegas 2. Vegas 2 was a success, the clan’s record standing at 22-0, #1 on the ladder, with victory in the ConsoleGaming clan tournament, firmly putting to bed daemons of being runners up yet another time.
After the lack of clan support of Battlefield Bad Company, and desperate for anything to compete on, RoughNeX created a squad on Call of Duty: World at War. The new-look team gelled together well, firmly establishing themselves at the top of the ConsoleGaming clan ladder, with a record of 38-3, and winning the ConsoleGaming Bolt Action Tournament.
In early July 2009 Battlefield 1943 became available for download on the Playstation Store, a purely multiplayer game set in the Second World War and featuring the Frostbite engine first witnessed in Battlefield: Bad Company. Given the team’s history and love of the battlefield series it was no surprise that they quickly got to grips with it, and competed on the ConsoleGaming ladder. The team started well, but then suffered a shock upset to a tactically superior BSQ who they had previously beaten, which served as fresh motivation for them to improve their skills. Accordingly, the team rewrote their strategies, with the target of taking home tournament gold. Success soon followed, culminating in emerging victorious in the tournament final. With this win RoughNeX secured both the ladder and the tournament, and started thinking about the upcoming Modern Warfare 2.
MW2 didn't really take of for the RNX team, and we went on a gaming hiatus of sorts (when Bad Company 2, Killzone 3, and SOCOM 4 didn't take off), up until September 2011, when RNX launched its first backed Black Ops team, in the form of Unearthly ,Ced ,Keano and JakeyyB ,who are to represent the team at the upcoming EGL4 in London. |
